Description

50 x 50cm.  Acrylic and Ink, framed in oak

This piece continues the theme of Art within Art, and references to France and French/ European culture. A Juan Miro exhibition poster hangs on the wall as well as a Matisse postcard. I balanced this out by bringing in the all-important Australian Vegemite jar! The apples and red geranium are nods to classic Still Life painting, as they are elements the masters often use in their studies. The steel jug captures a distorted reflection of the scene. Textures and pattern play feature again in this work, as I find them so joyful. I like the idea of painting these little tablescapes, snapshots of ordinary objects that tell a story about everyday life. Our daily clutter says a lot about us!

About the Artist

Emilie Maguin is a French visual artist based in Perth, Western Australia. She acquired her artistic training in Aix-en-Provence, and some of her influences include Henri Matisse, David Hockney, and Vanessa Bell. Her work is bold, playful, a poetic depiction of the world with a focus on strong colour and pattern. Symbolism and storytelling are the heart of each composition where layers of heavy acrylics, pastels and ink build up the textural plane of the canvas, adding to the visual interest and tactility of the paintings. Emilie’s pieces live in collections all over Australia, as well as in the U.K, Switzerland, France and Japan.
