About the Artwork:

Through the lush Dandenong ranges the tree ferns stand tall, some over 100years old hold secrets of the bushland.

About the Artist:

Nature has always been Jonathan's muse — the wild landscapes of Australia, the ocean reefs, rainforests, and vast outback skies. His art is a reflection of that world: bold, layered, and alive with movement. Each painting begins as a feeling — a sense of place, a memory, or even a dream — and evolves through dozens of layers until it tells its own story.

More about

Jonathan W Gemmell

10 Years, 3,000 Artworks, and a Lifelong Passion for Colour and Imagination

I’ve always believed that art isn’t just something you hang on a wall — it’s something you feel.

Over the past decade, I’ve painted thousands of works that explore nature, emotion, and the imagination — each one an adventure through colour, texture, and storytelling.

From humble beginnings painting late at night after long days of landscaping, to now creating full-time in my Melbourne studio, this journey has been anything but ordinary. More than 3,000 of my artworks have found homes across Australia and around the world — in private collections, designer interiors, and spaces that celebrate creativity and connection.

My Inspiration

Nature has always been my muse — the wild landscapes of Australia, the ocean reefs, rainforests, and vast outback skies. My art is a reflection of that world: bold, layered, and alive with movement. Each painting begins as a feeling — a sense of place, a memory, or even a dream — and evolves through dozens of layers until it tells its own story.

Through texture, colour, and light, I want to transport people into those dreamlike spaces — to feel calm, inspired, and connected to something bigger than themselves.

The Journey

My creative path began at just 5 years old, with a paintbrush in one hand and a shovel in the other. Before becoming a full-time artist, I worked as a landscape designer and horticulturalist, designing gardens and outdoor spaces that connected people to nature. That same love of balance, composition, and natural beauty now flows through every painting I create.

Over the years, I’ve built a loyal following of collectors, exhibited in major galleries across Australia, and developed my online gallery Art by JWG, where my originals and limited editions reach audiences far beyond the studio walls.

This journey has been about more than just art — it’s been about persistence, passion, and building something that others can feel part of.

Today

I now create full-time from my studio on the outskirts of the Yarra Valley, where each piece is hand-painted, photographed, and prepared for collectors across the globe.

Every artwork is an invitation — to pause, imagine, and feel. Whether it’s a large-scale statement piece or a limited edition print, my goal is to bring warmth, energy, and emotion into your home.

Thank you for being part of this journey — 10 years, 3,000 artworks, and countless stories still to be painted.
