Description

78 x 78cm. Acrylic on canvas, framed in blackwood

Artwork Meaning: This artwork is a representation of my home and what it embodies for me. It shares the seasons on Wiradjuri Country and the rich life I live, connected to my homelands. There is a central meeting place with my family nestled around. The wildflowers that adorn the hills adjacent my home sprawl across the canvas like they do the lands. Three prominent hills stand at the bottom of the work- all visible from my house, connecting me to the Dreaming stories of my ancestors, myself and my children. There is water- the giver and keeper of life, there are animals, connected to the land and thriving on it. There are trees, standing tall and proud. There are tools- a symbol of the tools Mother Earth gives us. All a symbol of my home and all a part of me, continuing to connect and remind me of my place on this Earth.

About the Artist

When Wiradjuri artist Amanda Hinkelmann started painting back in 2019, she experimented with bold, contrasting colours and explored ways to share her First Nations history and culture. As her skills developed and she transitioned from her role as school principal to full-time painting, Amanda’s palette became more refined, and her unique symbolism and pattern work started shining through. Modern, textural, feminine, deeply meaningful and emotive, Amanda’s abstract paintings are inspired by strong connections – to her loved ones, to Mother Earth and to her ancestral home on Wiradjuri Country, in the Riverina region of New South Wales. A trained dancer, Amanda respects her innate creativity and responds to the fierce power of nature, the changing seasons and the beauty of birds and flowering gums. Amanda’s paintings are instantly recognisable due to the detailed white dot work that forms the final layer on each piece and adds definition to the storytelling elements contained within. Creating large-scale works on canvas, she combines neutral and earthy hues and aims to convey messages from nature. Every painting subtly provokes thought on the meaning of being deeply connected to Country. Amanda has held three solo exhibitions, had multiple sell-out collections and has built a reputation of quality, meaning and beauty within her highly sought after works.
