TTG Travel Guides - The Melbourne Coaster List Part 1 - Bars
The last time I visited Melbourne I went to the Caretaker's Cottage, a bar on the Northern side of the city, at the recommendation of gallery artist Kelly Kondis. Now, I have been given a lot of recommendations, but this one has been one of the best by far, for all manner of reasons.
The setting is pretty fabulous; cozy in winter and spacious and cool in summer as the outdoor concrete steps come into play. The bar snacks are great and the drinks list small but superb. However, while these factors make this a truly splendid place to enjoy a pre dinner drink, after work imbibe or lengthy Sunday session, what truly set the Caretaker's Cottage apart from other establishments was The List.
The List, scribbled on the back of two coasters, was kindly given to me by one of the friendly bar staff, and contained his top bars and restaurants, which I am going to share here; giving you plenty of hot spots to try on your travels.
Bars
Above Board - The laneway off Smith and Perry Streets, Collingwood
Finding this space is part of the fun. It only seats 16 and no bookings are taken so make sure you have a plan B.
Good Measure - 193 Lygon Street, Carlton
Cafe by morning and segueing into a bar by...whatever time is ok in your world. This is the perfect spot for a quick nip or a long session listening to the ever rotating list of guest Djs.
Whiskey and Alement - 270 Russell Street, Melbourne
Just as it sounds, lovers of whiskey and ale are well catered for in this cosy bolt hole. However, there is also a solid range of wines and cocktails, making this the perfect spot for all. There is also a short but well considered menu for those needing to stay a little longer.
Bar Margaux - Basement, 111 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
Finding this space may be a bit of a challenge, but once you do and delve into this cavernous subterranean space, you will feel transported to that cosy Parisian bar whose name you have long forgotten. The wine list here is well considered, tight and delicious, as are the traditional cocktail offerings. Pair your tipple with a solid and simple menu that showcases the best of simple French cuisine (if there is such a thing).
