About the Artwork:

"Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself”, the opening line of one of my favourite books by Virginia Woolf and a perfect example of why, I find the flower still life a source of immense inspiration. When I see a flower still life, my mind starts asking questions. I wonder who picked these flowers, why did the person chose these flowers, are there anything the painter wants the viewer to think about, when painting a certain type of flower? Mrs Dalloway is having an important dinner party, and striving for perfection, she is not relying on any other than herself to pick the perfect flowers.

In these two oil paintings, I have chosen to depict the pink Lily flower. The Lily was a often used symbol in the work of Renaissance poets, with its rapid decay and strong perfume scent they provided a metaphor for the dangers of uncontrolled desire. Quite wild connotations if you ask me and interesting and inspiring thoughts to work with in a painting. I have added to this wild nature of the lily painting with expressive and abstract brush strokes. So personally a still life for me is never just flowers in a vase. And here I have used the lily to symbolise the brevity of life, the transience of life and beauty and as mentioned before I might even have thought about the possibilities of desire and lust due to the sensory nature of its scent and form. Something quite decadent about the dear lily, indeed.

I wonder if you also noticed the red onions in the painting? Onions have long held spiritual and symbolic significance across cultures. They have been associated with eternal life, due to their layers, which were seen as symbols of the layers of protection that guard the soul. Always more to my still lifes than what just meets the eyes. Enjoy...
