About the Artwork:

Dear M, D, F and V, You may not know this – I adore it when you say to me “I love you Mum”. Seriously…this is a bigger deal that you know. In our Vietnamese culture, we never say “I love you”, so I never grew up hearing these words from my own family. It’s not because there is no love…there is absolutely an abundance of love, but in Vietnam, we have a different way of saying “I love you”. Instead, parents and grandparents would say “you must eat more” or show their love through their actions. Simple acts such as cutting up fruit for you, or through grand actions such as the sacrifices they make so that you don’t see the hardship in life. However, growing up in Australia and seeing mixed expectations of different cultures, I grew up very conflicted. I’m okay though… I love that I was able to embrace and learn different cultures. You also get to experience different cultures (and the challenges that come with it all), but know that I will always cut up your fruits for you, and I will never stop saying I love you as well. Love always, Mum xo

Catherine’s paintings begin with something real—a gesture, a shadow, an object, a memory. She paints the familiar not to distort it, but to reveal the deeper stories they quietly hold.

Catherine Nguyen-Hoang is a contemporary artist whose paintings begin with something real—a gesture, a shadow, a memory. She paints the familiar not to distort it, but to reveal the deeper stories they quietly hold.

Working primarily in oils, Catherine explores themes of memory, identity, and emotional weight through a lens that blends realism with subtle surrealism. Her compositions often feature everyday objects and spaces, transformed by context and metaphor to evoke inner tension, cultural complexity, and lived experience.

Catherine’s work has been recognised in several national art prizes, including the National Emerging Art Prize, the SALA Don Dunstan Foundation Awards, and the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize. Her paintings have been acquired through private commissions and one is currently on display at the University of Adelaide, South Australia.
