Margaret Delahunty Spencer
Margaret is an Australian abstract artist whose expressive works on linen explore the power of gesture, movement and mark-making. Working primarily with oils, acrylics and charcoal, her paintings are intuitive and layered, inviting viewers to connect with both the seen and the unseen.
Inspired by the natural world, Margaret has recently been drawn to the intricate microscopic life within waterways, the rhythms of nature, and the conversations of birds. Her practice is also deeply influenced by everyday experiences—time spent with friends, the changing seasons, and the profound shifts brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. These reflections have led her to explore themes of home, relationships, transition and the experience of empty nesting.
Alongside her painting practice, Margaret creates handcrafted clay vessels that extend and complement her artistic language. With a background in Fine Art, she has enjoyed a career as both a practising artist and educator, while also exploring fashion design. Margaret lives and works in Ballarat, Victoria, and maintains a second studio in the coastal town of Breamlea.
