Description:
This piece is part of a body of work exploring the geology of Northern Queensland. Through conversations with my partner, a geologist, I came to truly appreciate how many intersections there are between geology and ceramics. I developed the appreciation of geology as the source of materials for potters, not only for clays, but for glaze materials as well. This specific piece is inspired by drill core samples collected by my partner as part of geological exploration in Charters Towers. In creating this work, I used a mixture of stoneware clays and clay stains to create different coloured clay, which I marbled together, and stretched to create cracking to represent rock. This piece reflects the relationship between rocks, and the aspects of clay and glaze that they become for potters.
