Description:
Did you know that in various Native American cultures the Zebra Finch symbolizes joy, happiness and celebration? Apparently, it is due to its color, song and behavior. I just think they’re cute and cheeky!
From process to conception, this painting actually did bring me joy. I am lucky enough to live on the coastal town of Albany WA, where I am surrounded by a combination of soothing waters and rugged oceans. I often take myself on walks where I can be immersed in its beauty, the ocean air, the sail boats, the wildlife and the amazing Flora; an artist’s playground.
I chose to design this artwork using these elements plus nestling the cute Zebra Finch within. This painting style I call the ‘White Series’, it is a technique I have been developing over a number of years and it continually expands its horizons, which is very exciting for me as a professional artist.
Although I start out with a plan, the application is very intuitive and experimental. It begins with multiple layers of transparent and opaque color, then layers of white segment each element and pen outlines and finalizes the ultimate design.
It is a long process, sometimes intimidating because I am not sure where its heading, procrastination is always hovering. However, this particular piece just held its own and dictated exactly what I originally intended; Uniqueness and playful joy. It’s a happy painting.
I have titled it ‘The Call of Joy’ and I hope that when it is in your view, you will feel a spark of happiness in your spirit.
